Samsung Washer SE / 5E Error Code: Drain Pump Diagnosis

Samsung washer SE/5E means the unit cannot drain within the expected time window. Causes range from a clogged debris filter to a failed drain pump.

The SE (newer panels display it as 5E) error on a Samsung washer means the machine started a drain cycle but did not pump out enough water within the expected time window. The control board halts the cycle and flashes the code. It's one of the most common Samsung washer faults — and one of the most likely to be a DIY fix.

    What the code actually means

Samsung's control firmware monitors the pressure sensor during drain. If the water level doesn't drop fast enough, the firmware concludes the drain path is restricted or the pump isn't moving water and stops the cycle to protect the motor and the bellows. The code does not tell you which part of the drain path is at fault — it just tells you the drain failed.

    The drain path, in order

    1. Tub drain hose (inside the cabinet, from tub to pump)
    2. Drain pump filter (debris filter behind the lower-front access panel — front-load models)
    3. Drain pump itself (impeller, motor, electrical connection)
    4. Drain hose to the wall (kinks, height of the standpipe)
    5. Standpipe / house drain (clogs upstream of the washer)

DIY checks (in order of likelihood)

    1. Clean the debris filter (front-load models)

Most front-load Samsung washers have a debris filter behind a small access panel at the bottom-front. Open it, drain residual water into a shallow pan (there will be water — at least a quart), unscrew the filter, and clear out hair, coins, lint, and the occasional sock. This resolves a large share of SE codes in 10 minutes.

    2. Inspect the external drain hose

Pull the washer out from the wall. Check that the drain hose isn't kinked behind the unit and that the discharge end isn't pushed too deep into the standpipe (which can cause siphoning). The standpipe should be at least 30 inches tall but not more than 96 inches.

    3. Listen for the drain pump

Run a Spin Only cycle. You should hear the drain pump as a smooth, high-pitched whine. If you hear a buzzing or clicking but no water moves, the pump impeller is jammed (debris) or the motor has failed. If you hear nothing, the pump may have an open winding or an electrical fault.

    4. Check for a clogged standpipe / house drain

Disconnect the washer's discharge hose and run water down the standpipe with a garden hose. If it backs up, the problem is upstream of the washer and the SE code is a symptom of a plumbing issue.

When it's the drain pump itself

If the filter is clean, the hoses are unobstructed, and the pump motor either doesn't run or runs without moving water, the pump assembly needs to be replaced. On most Samsung front-load models the pump is accessed from the bottom or front of the cabinet. Use the OEM Samsung pump — aftermarket pumps frequently throw SE/5E or 9E codes within a few weeks because they don't match Samsung's flow-rate expectations.

    Typical Bay Area repair costs

    • Debris filter cleanout (in-shop diagnosis): $89 diagnostic, waived if any other repair is approved
    • Drain hose replacement: $180–$280
    • OEM drain pump assembly: $260–$420
    • Pressure sensor (rare, but does fail): $200–$320
